Case Study: Modernizing Geospatial Utility Intelligence for Vulcan Line Tools

Client: Vulcan Line Tools
Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Industry: Electric Utility & Telecommunications
Project Focus: Application Scalability, Infrastructure Modernization, Backend Refactor

Client Overview

Vulcan Line Tools is a Birmingham-based innovator serving the electric utility and telecom industries. Their mission is to equip field teams and engineers with advanced tools that improve safety and operational efficiency. Among their flagship solutions is Azmyth, a geospatial software platform designed to map, analyze, and optimize utility grids for planning, maintenance, and expansion.

The Challenge

Azmyth was built to support critical utility operations by allowing teams to geospatially analyze existing infrastructure, identify problem areas, and plan future line placements. However, the original implementation of the platform presented limitations that threatened Vulcan’s ability to scale its solution for enterprise-level projects.

Key challenges included:

  • A monolithic architecture built on Django that lacked performance under growing demand

  • Inefficient state management impacting application reliability

  • A database schema that restricted flexibility in handling complex utility datasets

  • Security and scalability concerns that limited broader deployment

Vulcan Line Tools turned to Osprey to help refactor and modernize Azmyth into a future-ready, enterprise-grade platform.

Our Solution

Osprey conducted a comprehensive overhaul of the Azmyth application, focusing on backend scalability, application reliability, and future-proof architecture:

  • Framework Migration: We migrated the core backend from Django to FastAPI, providing a more lightweight, performant, and scalable foundation that better aligns with the demands of high-throughput geospatial analysis.

  • State Management Enhancement: To increase responsiveness and stability in the user experience, MobX was introduced for client-side state management, enabling seamless interactions and predictable behavior across the application.

  • Database Redesign: A new, flexible PostgreSQL schema was developed to support dynamic data relationships and improved configurability—essential for managing large, multi-phase infrastructure projects.

  • Scalability & Security Improvements: The re-architecture focused on modular services, role-based access controls, and optimized API performance, ensuring Azmyth could securely scale across organizations and project geographies.

Results

The refactored Azmyth platform now serves as a scalable, secure, and highly reliable cornerstone of Vulcan Line Tools’ product suite. Early adoption of the revamped system has enabled Vulcan to:

  • Pursue and support larger-scale utility grid projects

  • Offer faster and more stable performance in field conditions

  • Expand data handling capabilities with the new database model

  • Build confidence with clients through improved security and stability
